Each year the Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society (NEPAS) presents a $4000 scholarship to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a career in an environmental field.
Kristin DeVilliers is this year’s scholarship winner. Daughter of David and Dawn DeVilliers, Kristin is a 2014 graduate of Delaware Valley High School in Milford and will be attending Unity College in Maine. She plans a double major in Captive Wildlife Care and Education and Adventure Education.
Kristin became interested in Captive Wildlife Care by volunteering as an intern with the Delaware Valley Raptor Center. Although she cheerfully cleans cages at the rehabilitation center, she has also gained valuable veterinarian experience. “I assist Bill Streeter, the director, with some of the veterinary work that goes along with the care of the birds. I’ve taken x-rays of the broken wing of a Red Shouldered Hawk and force-fed a Golden Eagle. Another rewarding part of my job is going on bird bandings and hawk watches.”
The Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society is proud to support the youth of our area through college and camp scholarships. The funding for these scholarships is generated from the Audubon Art and Craft Festival held each July in Hawley, PA. This year’s festival will be July 19 and 20 at Wallenpaupack High School.
