Birding by Boat, Sat. June 7th

Birding by boat

Join Audubon Education Chair Kathy Dodge for a birding-by-boat outing at Promised Land State Park at 5:30 PM on Saturday, June 7th.

The birds should be singing their hearts out at this time of year, and showing off their breeding plumage. Participants should provide their own canoes or kayaks and meet at the lower lake’s Bear Wallow parking lot. Binoculars are recommended.

To register for this trip, call Promised Land at (570) 676-3428.

Bird Walk at Prompton State Park, Sat. May 17th

Baltimore Oriole & Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. (c) 2014 Chris Fischer.

Our next guided bird walk will be at Prompton State Park this coming Saturday (May 17, 2014), starting at 8am. All are welcome to join us, from those just starting out to those with years of experience.

At this time of year, migratory bird species have well established breeding territories and will be very vocal, making them easy to locate. Birds that we are likely to see include multiple warbler species, the four species of Vireos that breed in our region, and a walk at the north end of the lake should produce flycatchers, waterfowl, Veery, Wood and Hermit Thrushes, Baltimore Orioles, and perhaps Spotted Sandpipers. We are also likely to see Common Ravens, which breed in the park, and Bald Eagles are always a possibility! This is a very rich area for breeding birds and there may be a surprise or two waiting down the trail!

Prompton State Park is located in Wayne County, just off Rt. 6 between Waymart and Honesdale. We will meet at 8am at the boat launch which is located off Rt. 170. Click here to see the boat launch location using Google Maps – the boat launch is directly across from the address this map brings up, and the entrance is very clearly marked from Rt. 170.

This FREE guided bird walk is sponsored by Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon and will be led by Barbara Leo, Conservation Committee Chair. Sturdy shoes and binoculars are recommended. Questions? Please call Barbara at (570) 253-2364 for more information.
